If you are a local merchant, retailer or service professional and your web site is not on the first page of Google or Bing then the chances of people finding you are very slim indeed. You may have a great web site, but if it can not be found, what good does it do you? Search engines are replacing the Yellow Pages books as the default source for local goods and services.

How Do Clients Find Your Website?

The top six inches on a search page is where all the money is made.

  • 2 or 3 Paid Ads on top get 3% of clicks
  • Top 5 organic listings 88% of click through traffic
  • Bottom 5 get the rest
  • Internet Usage

  • 74.1% of all US Consumers are online
  • 63% of the above are broadband users
  • E Commerce 2009 $156 Billion
  • Estimated 2010 E Commerce $165.4 Billion
  • Search Engine Usage

  • Google 67%
  • Yahoo 14.3%
  • Bing 12.9
  • Using the figures above Bing now has a minimum of 28% since Bing is now serving results for Yahoo. So there is basically only two search engines although there are hundreds of others like Ask and Dogpile etc.

In a study done by Cornell University the organic or free search results get 97% of all page search. And as stated above the top five get about 88%. In your own experience how many times do you yourself go past the top five listings?
